The Lakeland School Board (LSB) met for a business meeting last night (3.5.18). This is the only School Board meeting for the month as the Board will not meet next week due to the spring break holiday.
There was not a live stream due to updates on the system but staff stated they would be working to upload the recorded meeting.
There were no public comments.
It was announced that LMPS (Lakeland Middle Preparatory School) was the Shelby County Champion in the 2017-2018 “Battle of the Books”. Both Dr. Ted Horrell, Lakeland School System (LSS) superintendent and Board members congratulated Bethany Christy (LMPS librarian) as well as all that were involved.
Dr. Horrell stated he was reviewing options on school transportation including reviewing a new service to the area as well as current transportation provider Durham.
He also stated that the new athletic field proposals are being put together for review over the spring break and hoped to have a special call meeting to approve construction by the end of March.
Spring Registration startup will be ready on March 22 for online registration.
Dr. Horrell discussed approval of a Renaissance Group contract to provide architectural services for Lakeland Elementary School (LES) building expansion. Kevin Duncan with Renaissance was present but did not address the board.
Dr. Horrell provided a detailed visual presentation on “Lakeland School System Safety and Security Measures.” His presentation provided a breakdown of safety measures that are currently set as well as optional additional measures to protect the safety of children and staff.
Slides from his presentation are included with this story. One of the slides shows an easy door lock in a lockdown situation. Dr. Horrell explained a teacher can simply pull the red tab instead of having to get out keys to lock a door.
