LPS Choir, Band, & Orchestra Students Receive Honors

Each year, WTVMEA (West Tennessee Vocal Music Education Association) and WTSBOA (West Tennessee School Band & Orchestra Association) sponsor honor choir, band, and orchestra clinics and concerts: the All Southwest TN Honor Choir, the All West TN Honors Band, and the All West TN Honors String Orchestra, respectively.

Renowned choral and instrumental conductors are appointed to select the music, as well as to lead the rehearsals and concert. Students from across West Tennessee audition for these special groups. Due to COVID 19 restrictions, this year the students auditioned remotely. All students made recordings of selected prepared excerpts for their voice part or instrument, and the band and orchestra students performed multiple scales as well. Students were scored in a variety of categories, including tone quality, intonation, musicality, technical accuracy, diction, and rhythm.

Lakeland Preparatory School had 12 students chosen for the honor choir, 10 students chosen for the honor bands, and 6 students chosen for the honors orchestra. The 2021 All Southwest Tennessee Honor Choir event is scheduled for Friday, April 30 and Saturday, May 1. There is no in person event scheduled for Bands and Orchestras this year, but the accomplishment of being selected for these prestigious ensembles pays tribute to the time and effort that all students put forth to prepare their audition material. Choir Director Mrs. Miller, Band Director Mr. Hopper, and Orchestra Director Mrs. Turner are very proud of these students’ choice to go the extra musical mile this year!
