A group of 5th grade girls from Lakeland Preparatory School earned service hours for National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) this past weekend. They gathered together (socially distanced and masked, of course!) to make paper flowers and write notes of encouragement to folks in the community for 901 POP.
According to their Facebook page, “901 Petals of Purpose (POP) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to spread joy and inspire kindness in our community through the repurposing of flowers and the sharing of personal experiences.” The group was started a little over a year ago by Memphian Stephanie Simpson. They collect vases and donations of flowers from weddings to repurpose and deliver.
Each month they choose a different group/place to bless with flowers. When fresh flowers are not available, they make paper flower creations and the arrangements are always accompanied with a note of encouragement.
Staci Goforth, whose daughter is in NEHS, hosted the gathering. She said, “The girls collected vases in the community via Facebook, made paper flowers from tissue paper and wrote handwritten notes of encouragement.” The effort resulted in 5 large boxes of collected vases, roughly 50, donated and collected from the Lakeland community. The December recipients of the flowers is MIFA’s Meals on Wheels delivery program.
