LMPS students selected for All West Band in Saturday competition

Over 20% of the LMPS (Lakeland Middle Preparatory School) band members have been selected for the All West Band ensemble this year, according to Anneliese Land, LMPS band director, BM | Music Education and Euphonium Performance

The students auditioned Saturday (1.12.19) at Arlington High School with 750 other students from the West Tennessee region middle schools.  Mrs. Land said there were also high school and jazz auditions the same day.

Those selected for the Blue Band (top band for All West) are:

Caroline Floyd                                                 Hannah Ivy

Oliva McLaughlin                                            Carlos Medina

Emma Sheridan

Selected for Red Band (second band) are:

Sean Chung                                                     Dudley Nichols

Andrew Red                                                    Jennifer Tan

Aide Xue was named an alternate.

Mrs. Land explained the audition process.  “Students perform three short excerpts of music distributed to them in advance of the audition, perform a chromatic scale displaying the full range of their instrument, perform two major scales selected at random and conclude with performing a short sight reading excerpt.

“The students are given 30 seconds to look over a couple of lines of music they have never seen before, and then are rated on their ability to accurately perform what they see.”

She said all students selected will gather for the All West Clinic Feb. 14-16 at the Cannon Center for Performing Arts in downtown Memphis.

In 2017, the first year of operation for LMPS, four students and one alternate were selected for All West.

“This year, we have nine students plus one alternate. And, our student who made alternate was one-half point away from making it into either the Red or Blue Band! Over 20% of our LMPS Concert Band students have been selected for an All West ensemble this year.”
