LMPS students competing in solo track challenges during quarantine

The COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t stopped two LMPS (Lakeland Middle Preparatory School) 6th graders from practicing for track, despite school closures and event cancellations because of the virus.

Porter Spiceland, son of Emily and Jonathan Spiceland, and Maui Boles, daughter of Kristen and Bryan Boles, have been participating in solo weekly challenges from MYA (Memphis Youth Athletics).  MYA organizes cross country meets at Shelby Farms for students.  Porter and Maui were to be part of LMPS’ first year of middle school track.

The purpose of the challenges is to exercise, but independently, thus solo challenges.  The first week was a mile, last week was an 800/half mile.  This week is a two-mile challenge, according to Mr. Spiceland.

They also had a challenge to create an animal or shape using the GPS route on Facebook or Instagram pages.  Local businesses offer prizes to the weekly winners.  Porter won a gift card from Fleet Feet.
