LMPS: No reason for concern, says superintendent, of gun threat rumors yesterday

The rumors of a threat of gun violence yesterday (9.11.19) at LMPS (Lakeland Middle Preparatory School) were investigated and it was determined no threat was actually made.

The Lakeland School System (LSS) superintendent, Dr. Ted Horrell, posted to the LSS Facebook page yesterday:

Dr. Ted Horrell

“We are aware of the rumors that a student at Lakeland Middle Preparatory School made a threat of gun violence at the school today (9.11.19). The school administration investigated this rumor thoroughly and determined that no threat was actually made. To be clear…they did not determine that there was a threat made that was not credible, but rather that no threat was made at all. Administrators have yet to speak with any students who directly overheard or witnessed a threatening comment.

“If you feel that your child did witness a threat of violence, please pass on that information to school administrators. Thank you!”

This morning, Dr. Horrell said, “We take threats and rumors of threats very seriously. Our regular process is to involve our Shelby County school resource officer, Officer Luna, in all investigations involving threats and rumors of threats. We then involve the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department as recommended. We will always strive to err on the side of caution with regard to student safety.

“As for today, we are not aware of any reason for parents to be concerned about the safety of their students. Our administrators will continue to interview any students who heard or hear any comments that cause concern to them and to investigate accordingly.”

LMPS serves students in grades 5-8.
