Ten LMPS (Lakeland Middle Preparatory School) students will audition for the All Southwest Tennessee Junior High Honor Choir Saturday (10.26.19) at Colonial Middle School (CMS) in Memphis.
Frances Miller, choir director, said students from 37 schools in southwest Tennessee will be competing for 200 positions in the choir. This event is sponsored by the West Tennessee Vocal Music Education Association (WTVMEA).
Each student has learned six choral pieces, and members of WTVMEA have selected segments of each piece to be sung at the audition, said Mrs. Miller. “On audition day, the students will sing before a panel of five judges, who will score the singers based on tone quality, rhythmic accuracy, intonation, musicality and diction. The top-scoring fifty students for each voice part: soprano, alto, tenor, bass, will be selected to participate in the concert in mid-November.”
Mrs. Miller said LMPS students have been diligently preparing. “Dr. JemmiLou Rye, accomplished singer and well-known vocal coach, is conducting two afternoon clinics to help students develop confidence and good vocal technique. This event is highly competitive and acceptance into the choir is a great honor. We wish all our LMPS students the best of luck!”
