A newly formed Jazz Band is joining Beginning Band and Concert Band for the annual Winter Concert at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 11 in the LMPS (Lakeland Middle Preparatory School) Cafetorium.
Anneliese Land, band director, said the Jazz Band is another first for the 15-month old middle school. “This will be the Jazz Band’s first performance. We formed about a month and a half ago and rehearse twice a week before school,” said Mrs. Land.
She said the newly formed band gives the students an opportunity to learn a whole new genre of music. “I want students in our program to be well-rounded musicians, and playing in the Jazz Band helps to strengthen our students’ individual musicianship.
“They also can enjoy making music with their peers in a different setting. Many of our students are even playing a secondary instrument in the ensemble, an instrument different from the one they play in Concert Band.”
Mrs. Land said she asked the students last spring who might be interested in learning jazz. “I had a lot of students indicate interest. We started rehearsing in mid-September and look forward to our first performance at the Winter Concert.”
There are 27 members in Beginning Band, 46 in Concert and 17 in Jazz Band.
During the concert, Band Boosters will have a bake sale.
LMPS serves grades 5-8. Lakeland high school students attend Arlington High School through an interlocal between the two cities.
