Students from the LMPS (Lakeland Middle Preparatory School) band and orchestra will perform in the 2019 All-West Tennessee Middle School Red and Blue Bands and Honors Orchestra this week. All LMPS students were selected during auditions.
The rehearsals and performances will be Thursday through Saturday (2.14.19/2.16.19) at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts and Cook Convention Center in Memphis.
Nine band students were selected for the regional honor as well as four orchestra students.
Those selected for the Blue Band (top band for All-West)
Caroline Floyd – 8th grade, clarinet Hannah Ivy – 8th grade, trumpet
Oliva McLaughlin – 8th grade, horn Carlos Medina – 8th grade, bassoon
Emma Sheridan – 8th grade, horn
Selected for Red Band (second band)
Sean Chung – 7th grade, clarinet Dudley Nichols – 7th grade, tuba
Andrew Red – 8th grade, horn Jennifer Tan – 8th grade, flute
Aide Xue, 7th grade, flute, was named an alternate.
The two Middle School All-West bands will perform Saturday morning, said Anneliese Land, LMPS band director. “The Red Band plays from 8:30 – 9 a.m. and the Blue Band from 9 – 9:30 a.m. The rest of the Saturday performances include all of the High School All-West bands. There are 98 students in each the Middle School Blue Band and Middle School Red Band.
“The clinician for the Middle School Blue Band is Dr. John Oelrich, Director of Bands at University of Tennessee Martin. The clinician for the All-West Junior High Red Band is Karen Henning of Lane College.”
Mrs. Land said the selected students performed prepared musical excerpts, played major and chromatic scales from memory and demonstrated excellence in sight-reading to earn seats in these prestigious honors ensembles, representing the top level of musicianship in the West Tennessee region,” said Mrs. Land.
Paula Turner, LMPS orchestra director, said, “The guest conductor will be Dr. Angela Ammerman, who is Orchestra Director and Coordinator of Music Education at UT Martin. The students will rehearse Thursday and Friday and perform a concert on stage in the Cannon Center at 7:40 p.m. Friday.

Marian Jamora – concertmaster or first chair, having scored highest of over 150 violins
The All-West Middle School Orchestra will join with the other honors instrumental ensembles, including two high school orchestras, two middle school and four high school concert bands, and two high school jazz bands, to perform, said Mrs. Turner.
The All-West Honors Orchestras and Bands are sponsored by the West Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association (WTSBOA). Their website is wtsboa.org. The All-West honors concerts in February are part of the WTSBOA Convention of instrumental music educators at the Cook Convention Center the same February dates.
