Sarah Wang, a seventh grader at LMPS (Lakeland Middle Preparatory School), won 1st place for seventh grade and 3rd place overall in the Math Invitational for Girls (MIG) at the University of Memphis April 20th.
Her mother, Yingbo Li, said medals were awarded to the three highest scoring individuals in grades 6, 7 and 8 with trophies awarded to the top six highest scoring individuals overall.
According to the website, MIG started out as an idea to solve a problem: How to combat the underrepresentation of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). MIG was founded as a step towards breaking down the social barriers surrouonding gender bias in the fields of math and science. The mission is to inspire young women in STEM education with the annual event based in Memphis.
