One of the most anticipated awards at Lakeland Elementary School each year is the esteemed Lion’s Pride Award. This award was established in 2001 when the school opened by former principal Mrs. Rouse to focus on student’s character and citizenship. Current principal Mrs. Lockhart helped establish the criteria that is still used today:
- Show respect for authority
- Respect the rights and feelings of others through honesty and peacemaking
- Show compassion to those less “able or fortunate”
- Share of their time and/or talents freely
- Take immense pride in being a Lakeland lion
Teachers from each class in grades 1 – 4 choose one student who they feel consistently demonstrates these qualities. This is a one time award given during the student’s career at LES.
This tradition, which has spanned 20 years now, is known by the trademark ballcap given to the honorees. There were no Lions Pride winners last year, due to the Covid-19 shutdown of in-person school the last quarter. This year, there were still no end of the year award programs, but Mrs. Lockhart was able to make the presentations in the individual classrooms.
Mrs. Lockhart states “Presenting this award to these most deserving students was the highlight of the year. Our students have sacrificed so much this school year, so to go to each classroom and present the award was a lot of fun. What made the award even more special was that as soon as I announced the winner, the students clapped and cheered for their classmate. That display of celebration truly warmed my heart. Join me in celebrating our little lions as this is an incredible honor and I am extremely proud of each one of them”.
