Possible legislation to help Tennessee cities will be proposed by State Sen. Brian Kelsey in January and could benefit Lakeland if passed.
The proposal would give cities an extra half-cent sales tax revenue distribution. Generating $500 million, $50 million could go to Memphis as part of redistributing state tax revenue according to the Germantown senator.
Lakeland City Manager Jim Atkinson isn’t confident of the likelihood of such a bill, but said the money would be helpful to the City. “t would be nice for us,” he said. “The additional revenue would grow our budget and ability to spend on projects. “
Sen. Kelsey would like to divert part of the state’s budget surplus and send it back to cities.
