Last Friday evening (1.25.19) the Lakeland Parks and Rec program was a welcomed guest at the FedEx Forum as part of the Junior Grizzlies program.
Wendi Haley of Lakeland Parks and Rec said there are 209 players (ages 5-14) participating in Lakeland basketball this year. That encompasses grades K-8. Practices are held at LES (Lakeland Elementary School), LMPS (Lakeland Middle Preparatory School) and St. Paul United Methodist Church in Lakeland to accommodate the large numbers of players. Games for the Junior Grizzlies are at LES on Saturdays while the competitive teams play in gyms throughout the Memphis metro area.
One of the special treats for the players and families was the invitation to meet at the FedEx Forum at 5 p.m. so participants could sit courtside for player warm ups. Players from the Sacramento Kings and The Memphis Grizzlies warmed up on the court for the fans at courtside while the rest of the building remained empty.
Randomly chosen players from Lakeland were also chosen to stand on the court with players from both teams during the National Anthem while others had the opportunity to form a player tunnel as the teams came out for the game.
“It was such a fun night with so many Lakeland friends. There was quite a showing from Lakeland.” said Addie Stanley. Mrs. Stanley’s son was selected to be on the floor for the National Anthem.
Also of interest, that evening was Music Teacher Appreciation night for the Memphis area. LMPS’ own Tonya Miller was one of 12 selected from the area to appear on the court for recognition for the work she does at Lakeland Middle Prep. LMPS has already developed a sterling reputation for its music program.
