Although Lakeland has no Mayoral or Board of Commissioners races until November of this year, voters will still make important decisions in the August 6 election that will shape local, county, state and federal government.
Polls are open for Lakeland voters from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The ballot includes Tennessee’s Democratic and Republican primaries and Shelby County general election races. Among the most closely watched local contests are three Lakeland School Board seats, which oversee the direction of the city’s public school system.
Voters will also help decide the Republican primary for Tennessee House District 99, races for governor, U.S. Senate and Tennessee’s 8th Congressional District, as well as Shelby County mayor, County Commission District 3 and several countywide offices. In addition, voters will elect judges in multiple Shelby County races.
While no City Hall offices are up for election today, Thursday’s results will determine who represents Lakeland at other levels of government and influence decisions affecting education, public safety, infrastructure, transportation and county services for years to come.
