Once again Lakeland is celebrating Tennessee Tree Day and Arbor Day by giving away trees to residents.
The Parks and Recreation department will be giving away 100 sapling trees on Saturday, March 19, 2022, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. On that day Lakeland residents can drive thru the parking lot at IH Park (4523 Canada Road) and pick up a complimentary tree for their yard. This year residents can choose from different varieties including Oaks, Wild Plums, Red Buds, and more.
According to Pat O’Mara, Lakeland Parks and Recreation Director, there is a long tradition of Lakeland being tree-friendly. “The City of Lakeland has been recognized as a Tree City USA community for 16 years,” he said. He spoke about the importance of trees in the area and touted the benefits of having a sustainable tree population. “Not only can trees help clean the air and help manager stormwater runoff but having a tree canopy in a community can help homeowners save on their energy bills,” he said.
There’s also a bonus to the event this year. The city has partnered with Moe’s and they are taking advance orders for a Picnic Meal Kit. Those orders can be picked up at IH Park, from 10 a.m. to noon on the day of the tree event. According to Mr. O’Mara every meal kit that is preordered, $10 will be donated towards the recreation program.
