Lakeland Town Square Pavilion Project Faces Uncertainty

In 2024, developer Vince Smith showed this image as an example of what he wants to build for a pavilion in Lakeland Town Square. The pavilion would be used for farmer markets, craft fairs, and other events but the project is now in limbo due to funding questions.

As 2025 begins, the future of the proposed Lakeland Town Square Pavilion remains uncertain. While the project gained momentum in 2024, which you can read about here, doubts now linger about whether it will move forward in the near future. The central issue remains funding—who will foot the bill for the pavilion?

Last fall, a design for the pavilion was presented to the Municipal Planning Commission (MPC), marking a step in the right direction. The proposed structure, led by developer Vince Smith, has drawn both support and criticism, with suggestions that the design could benefit from refinements. During the MPC’s December meeting, the project was tabled for further consideration.

Commissioner Jim Atkinson told Lakeland Currents the matter was tabled due to a question of funding. “The proposal changed after MPC and before BOC, so we tabled it for more time to discuss. Originally, Vince (Smith) was going to build the pavilion then dedicate the lot and pavilion to the city. It changed to just the dedication of the lot with no pavilion, so the city would need to pay for and build the pavilion ourselves,” he said. “So, we’ll discuss it further and figure out the best way to proceed.”

Despite the funding challenges, many community members are still hopeful and see the pavilion as a potential asset for Lakeland as it could serve as a versatile venue for events like farmers markets, which are not currently feasible in the area.

The coming months will likely determine whether additional funding can be secured to bring the pavilion to life. For now, the project remains in limbo, awaiting a future decision from city officials.
