The newly resurfaced and blue Lakeland tennis courts in Windward Slopes Park are reopening tomorrow (11.28.18) after being closed about a week for the resurfacing work.
The Park is at 9822 Beverle Rivera Drive and was closed Nov. 17 to begin the work.
Kevin Rooney, director of Parks and Recreation for Lakeland, said a USTA (United States Tennis Association) grant for $10,000 was matched with about $13,000 from City funds to resurface, replace net posts and add small scoreboards, a bench with a shade structure and windscreens around the court.
“The grant amount was the highest we could receive for our resurfacing project,” said Mr. Rooney.
He added, “We also have an Eagle Scout who is going to build shade structures for the existing benches on the outside of the court.’
Once all projects are completed there will be an official grand reopening to celebrate the renovations, likely in the spring, he said.
Asked about the new color of the courts, Mr. Rooney said, “We did the blue on green coloring because it is easier to see the ball, and it is the same color scheme USTA uses with most of their courts”.
