The Tennessee Executive Director of USTA (United States Tennis Association) was on hand Tuesday (4.30.18) afternoon to cut the ribbon for the re-opening ceremony at the Windward Slopes tennis courts.
Michael Chamberlain came from Nashville to speak at the ceremony with Kevin Rooney, director of the Lakeland Parks and Recreation Department.
Also on hand were Commissioner Wesley Wright and Parks and Recreation Advisory Board Chair Mark Donley.
“The Lakeland Parks and Recreation Department was the recipient last fall of a large grant from the United States Tennis Association,” said Mr. Rooney. “That $10,000 grant was earmarked for a much needed resurfacing of the city’s tennis courts.” The award letter was received Oct. 30th and the work was finished in December including the resurfacing, shaded benches and windscreens with the Lakeland City logo.
The courts are part of Windward Slopes Park at 9700 Beverle Rivera Drive which are next door to the Shelby County Fire Department station.
Following the ribbon-cutting and remarks, David DeGutis, local tennis instructor, served some balls to Laura Harmeier, a 10th grade home-schooled student.
