Lakeland Preparatory School senior William Martinez has been named Lakeland Prep’s Athlete of the Week as he prepares to compete in the TSSAA Wrestling State Championships in Middle Tennessee.

Martinez, who will graduate this year and plans to join the United States Navy following graduation, will compete in the 175-pound weight class during the state tournament, set for February 20–21 at the Williamson County Ag Center in Franklin. He is the second wrestler from Lakeland Prep to qualify for the state competition since Zeke Schultz in the 2022-2023 season.

“This is William’s first year competing in wrestling, and he has set a standard for Lakeland wrestlers to strive for,” said Head Wrestling Coach Thomas Hanna.

Throughout the season, Martinez has compiled a 13-17 record, with 12 of his 13 victories coming by pin — a testament to both his strength and determination on the mat. Coaches credit his rapid development to his willingness to follow instruction and the strong support of his teammates as he worked toward this milestone.

The state championship tournament begins Friday, February 20, and concludes Saturday evening, with final matches expected to wrap up around 8:30 p.m. Lakeland Prep supporters will be watching closely as Martinez represents the school on one of Tennessee’s biggest high school wrestling stages.
