One person from Lakeland was killed Saturday (3.2.19) afternoon in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 70 just west of Canada Road.
Sgt. Chris Richardson, special programs/public information officer for the Tennessee Highway Patrol, said Richard Bryant, 68, of Lakeland was killed in the 1:19 p.m. accident which also resulted in five injuries.
The second vehicle was driven by a resident of Orem, Utah, Joseph Nofchissey, age 40. Four passengers in Mr. Bryant’s vehicle were from Clermont, FL. They were injured as was Mr. Nofchissey.
Sgt. Richardson said the 2015 Audi driven by Mr. Nofchissey was eastbound on Highway 70. The 2012 Toyota driven by Mr. Bryant was westbound on the Highway. The Audi crossed the center lane and hit the Toyota head on. The Toyota came to rest in a ditch.
One subject was ejected from the Audi, according to the report, which says the occupants of each vehicle were wearing seatbelts except for Mr. Nofchissey. Sgt. Richardson said he had no information on the extent of injuries to the passengers in the Toyota.
The posted speed on that section of the Highway is 45 mph, according to Sgt. Richardson. The THP accident report says charges are pending.
