Lakeland Lions scrimmage Munford, prepare for season

by Matt Wright

The 2019 LMPS Lions scrimmaged Munford this week at Lions Field in preparation for the upcoming season. In a blistering hot evening, both the varsity and JV teams scrimmaged. Both teams consist of players from 6th thru 8th grade.

The teams ran thru alternating 10 play sets while coaches were allowed on the field during play to help coach and correct. This was the second scrimmage of the season so far. The Lions struggled on defensive sets against Munford after having a strong defensive performance against Convington last week.

Coach Tyler White is once again the head football coach for the middle school along with a staff made up of LMPS coaches and volunteer coaches.

One of the volunteer coaches is Ernest Slaton who is helping with the JV this season. Coach Slaton has many years of football experience has a SYS head coach for Arlington. When asked about his thoughts so far on the young season, Coach Slaton said, “it’s been fun and challenging at the same time but we are headed in the right direction.”

Offensively, the Lions have play-makers to run out of multiple sets. Coach Slaton said he enjoys the system Coach White has installed since coming to Lakeland. “The Pistol Wing T is a great offense. It can be deceptive, it can be powerful or it can even be an air raid depending on the type players you have.”

The Lions open up against Bartlett on August 22 at LMPS.
