The display of Lakeland’s past, present and future was officially presented in downtown Memphis yesterday (6.11.18) at a reception for Lakeland and Shelby County officials.
The three glass display cases on Lakeland are in the lobby of the Vasco A. Smith Jr. County Administrative Building, 160 N. Main St. and are open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The 41-year-old City of Lakeland is the eighth exhibit of County areas since the building was renovated five years ago.
Kim Odom, special events coordinator for the City, was in charge of organizing the display. Helping with the exhibit were Nancy Koch, chair of the City Parks and Recreation Board; Wendi Haley, City recreation program supervisor: and Jim Atkinson, city manager.
During the reception, Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell, Jr. spoke about the exhibit which changes about every three months. He said it will be the last exhibit under his tenure. He was elected to his second four-year term in 2014 and cannot seek the seat again. Also speaking were Lakeland Mayor Wyatt Bunker and Jimmy Ogle, Shelby County historian and organizer of the project.
The plan to rotate historical displays from various areas of the County area began in 2015 under Mayor Luttrell, said Mr. Ogle.
