Lakeland community tennis announced for middle school students

The City of Lakeland along with Coach David DeGutis is offering positions on the Lakeland Tennis Team for middle school boys and girls, according to Wendi Haley, recreation program supervisor for the Lakeland Parks and Recreation Department (P & R).

“Mr. DeGutis, a tennis instructor with over 20 years of coaching, is excited about coaching the Lakeland teams,” said Ms. Haley.

“We will have six tennis matches scheduled against local middle school teams in March 2019. Practices will begin in February on Tuesdays and Fridays at the newly resurfaced Windward Slopes Tennis Courts.

“The registration fee is $225 per student. Tennis dry-fit jerseys and tennis practice balls are included in the fee. Black shorts with pockets need to be supplied by parents.”

She said there must be eight students registered to form a team.  The limit is 12 boys and 12 girls.

Deadline for registration and payment is January 14, 2019.

If you have any questions contact Mr. DeGutis at 412-9768 or email Ms. Haley at whaley@lakelandtn.org.

Also check out the Warm-Up Clinics for middle schoolers and the Winter Tennis Clinics beginning in January, said Ms. Haley.  Information flyers are posted at the end of this story.

According to Kevin Rooney, director of P & R, the City has a contract with Mr. DeGutis to operate all the City’s tennis programs.  “We make sure he posts when the courts are reserved. We try to balance programming time and free play.”
