Lakeland BOC Considering Citywide Fireworks Show for Independence Day

Lakeland residents could enjoy a fireworks show this July. The idea was discussed at tonight's BOC meeting.

The City of Lakeland is considering a citywide fireworks display to celebrate Independence Day in 2025. The proposal was put forward this evening by Mayor Josh Roman during the Lakeland Board of Commissioners (BOC) meeting at City Hall. The proposal receivd positive reception from the majority of the board. Commissioners voted 4-0 to approve Lakeland city staff to plan the event and to come back with a full proposal for an official vote at a later meeting.

The fireworks show would take place on Saturday, July 5, 2025, launching from the Lakeland Sports Annex Park, which is adjacent to Lakeland Preparatory School (LPS) on Old Brownsville Road. Mayor Roman anticipates that the display will be visible from several key locations around the city, including LPS, Brody Townsend Park on Memphis-Arlington Road, and Lakeland Town Square.

In addition to the citywide show, the Garner Lake Association is also expected to hold its annual fireworks display that same night. Mayor Roman has expressed a commitment to working with the group to coordinate the timing of both events to ensure residents can enjoy each display separately.

“The goal is to continue finding relatively low-cost ways to bring the community together,” Mayor Roman told Lakeland Currents. “Whether it’s the Lamp Concert Series, a Christmas Parade, or an Independence Day celebration.”

The fireworks show will align Lakeland with neighboring cities such as Bartlett and Germantown, which have long hosted similar holiday celebrations. The total cost for the show is expected to be around $30,000.
