In a significant step forward for Lakeland Prep, the Lakeland Board of Commissioners approved funding for an upgraded sound system to accompany a new video board at the high school’s multi-use stadium. The decision, made during Thursday evening’s meeting at Lakeland City Hall, also ensures the new video board will be equipped with top-tier audio to enhance the experience for spectators. The sound system part of the board is expected to cost approximately $70,000.
The video board will measure an impressive 32 feet by 16 feet—matching the size of the board at Collierville High School but boasting superior resolution to the Collierville board.
Positioned in the north end zone of the stadium, the video board will serve various sports programs, including youth and middle school football, high school football, and lacrosse. The initiative, spearheaded by Mayor Josh Roman, aligns with the school’s 10th-anniversary celebrations and aims to solidify community support for Lakeland Prep.
However, the decision sparked debate among commissioners. Commissioner Connie McCarter opposed the additional expense, arguing against the funding for the sound system upgrade. Other commissioners, including Mayor Roman and Commissioner Jim Atkinson, defended the investment. Atkinson emphasized the long-term savings, stating, “I don’t think spending a little now to prevent large spending later is a problem.”
In return for the city’s investment, the school system has agreed to produce two promotional videos about the City of Lakeland annually for the next five years, created by the school’s audio and video department. These videos will be showcased at events hosted at the stadium, highlighting Lakeland’s growth and initiatives to visitors from across West Tennessee. Additionally, the city secured naming rights to the board, with the Lakeland logo prominently displayed at the top.
The motion passed with Commissioner McCarter casting the sole dissenting vote. A timeline for the system’s construction has yet to be announced.
