On 8th grade recognition night, Lakeland Prep took the home floor for the last time in the shortened (due to COVID) 2020 volleyball season. The Lions soundly defeated the Arlington Tigers 2 sets to none. The Lady Lions went undefeated at home this season with wins over several good teams including West Collierville and Elmore Park.

8th grader Campbell Funk was a “superstar” according to Coach Lauren Cocroft and has been a leader all season. “Last year she (Campbell) was an outside hitter so it’s a big change (to setter and middle blocker). She’s been an amazing leader and player for the past 3 years with powerful hits, at least 5 points every time she goes to serve, and outstanding hustle all the way around.” She added, “Campbell has a true knowledge for the game and is a highly desired player by many clubs and high schools.”

Coaches also praised setter/right side player Lainey Richarde, talking about her tremendous growth as a player over the past year. “Lainey came in clutch in the second game (set) versus Arlington and helped lead us to victory” Coach Coacroft added.

The Lady Lions lost 5 starters from a very good 2019 team but Coach Katy Betts and Coach Cocroft bragged that all of the new girls stepped in and filled those shoes nicely in 2020. But with six 8th graders moving on those shoes will need to be filled again for next season as the Lions prepare for transitioning to high school volleyball.

Lakeland Prep has one away game versus Collierville left this season and then they will start the district tournament held at Elmore Park.
