The Lakeland Lady Lions Volleyball team opened its 2019 season exactly how you want with a dominant performance over Bon Lin Middle School in Bartlett. The game was played at Bon Lin Tuesday afternoon (8.20.19).
Already having a reputation as a strong volleyball program, Lakeland is coming off a stellar 2018 season where it advanced to the state regional tournament. The 2019 team is expected to have a strong season as well with a good mix of returning players.
After the games, Lions Assistant Coach Lauren Cocroft said, “The girls have been working so hard to continue what we started last season and were able to show everyone tonight that they are fully capable of competing and being excellent. They looked like a solid team.”
The “B” team started the afternoon off with a straight set victory over the home court Lynx. Sally Stephens led the B team Lions with a strong performance from the service line.
The “A” team (sometimes referred to as the varsity team) overpowered Bon Lin with a straight set victory as well. Campbell Funk had a great offensive and defensive performance in the the opening set which ended with the Lions up 25-12. The Lady Lions cruised from there and closed it out with a victory.
Parent David Funk seemed excited for the season to unfold telling Lakeland Currents, “You can tell the girls on the “A” team have improved since every one of them played (competitive) club ball this past off season. This should be a fun year for Lakeland.”
