Kevin Floyd – Seeking re-election to the School Board – Biography

Kevin Floyd

Kevin Floyd is a Lakeland School Board Candidate.  He is married to Rebecca and is the proud father of Caroline and Allison. Both of his children attend Lakeland schools.  He is a member of Covenant United Methodist Church and serves as a chancellor for the Memphis Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Kevin attended Germantown High School and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee.   After graduating from the University of Tennessee, Kevin obtained his Juris Doctor from the University of Mississippi.  Kevin currently operates his own law firm, The Floyd Law Firm, PLC and practices primarily in the area of real estate law.

Believing that education is an essential element of a child’s development and is a vital part of the foundation of a thriving community, Kevin ran for and was elected to the first Lakeland School Board in 2013.  Since that time Kevin has served as the Chairman of the Lakeland Board of Education and has been awarded a Level III Boardsmanship award by the Tennessee School Board Association.  During Kevin’s term on the Lakeland School Board, the Lakeland School System has been named an Exemplary School District twice by the State of Tennessee and has been the top ranked district for grades 3-5 in the State of Tennessee for the past three years.

Kevin has invested his time in the Lakeland community.  He has been a member of the Lakeland Elementary PTA, the Lakeland Middle Preparatory PTO, and various other school support organizations in addition to sponsoring events for the Lakeland Chamber, PTA, and Lakeland Education Foundation.  He has also coached youth basketball for the Lakeland recreation league.

Kevin Floyd is excited about the future of Lakeland and looks forward to continuing to serve our community as a Lakeland School Board member.

What is your vision for the Lakeland School System over the next four years

My vision for the upcoming four years includes two points of emphasis.

  1. We need to let teachers teach. I will continue my efforts to deregulate education and reduce many of the burdens teachers carry that are not related to educating our children.  I’ll continue to work with our legislators to make it easier for teachers to do what they do best – teach.
  1. We need to let kids be kids. Education is no longer just ABCs and 123s.   Students today have to deal with security concerns and high-pressure testing.  I’ll continue to implement policies to help keep our children safe. I will lobby for measures that reduce the pressure put on our students (and teachers) around standardized testing. In light of the desire to do what is best for our children’s health and education, we must consider the importance of school start times, especially for our high school students.

What is the major issue for the Lakeland School System and how do you address it?

I believe the major issue before the school system now is managing and preparing for growth.  Our school system has consistently been one of the highest achieving districts in the State of Tennessee.  This unprecedented level of achievement has created an unprecedented level of demand and growth.  President Lincoln once said, “You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.”  Likewise, we must continue to plan and take action to stay in front of the demand and growth to ensure our children have an optimal education experience kindergarten through 12th grade and provide our citizens a voice in the education of Lakeland students in K-12.

Why you are the person needed to guide the School System’s future?  List your capabilities.

I have had the honor of serving on the Lakeland School Board for the last four years.  I believe that the collaboration of the Board, not a single person, guides the school system.  During my term on the Board, Lakeland School System has operated with fiscally conservative policies – operating within our budget each year and continuing to contribute to reserves.  We completed the construction of the middle school campus on time and under budget.  As a result of my commitment and passion for public education, I have been awarded a Level III Boardsmanship award by the Tennessee School Boards Association.  I have the knowledge, experience, and temperament to be a strong School Board member and look forward to continuing to serve our community in that role.

Describe your involvement in the Lakeland Community.

For the last four years, I have served as the Chairman of the Lakeland Board of Education.  I have been a member of the PTA, PTO, and various other school support organizations.  I’ve coached several youth basketball teams for the Lakeland recreation league and have sponsored fundraisers for the Lakeland Chamber, Lakeland Education Foundation, and PTA.  I have established relationships with both state and county officials who represent Lakeland in an effort to serve as a voice for the Lakeland community.
