City, School, USDA officials sign documents for USDA high school loan

Lakeland has received verification that the application to fund the first high school in Lakeland has been formally approved, according to school and City officials.

Dr. Ted Horrell, superintendent for the Lakeland School System (LSS), and Shane Horn, Lakeland city manager, today (9.26.19) announced the details via two press releases.  Funding will come through a USDA Community Facilities Loan.

The School System currently operates two schools: Lakeland Elementary which serves grades K-4 and Lakeland Middle Preparatory School, which serves grades 5-8.  Currently high school students attend Arlington High School through an interlocal between the two cities.

Last month the State Board of Education named both Lakeland schools 2019 Reward Schools and LSS was ranked the #1 district in the state for grades 3-5 achievement and #2 ranked district in the state for grades 6-8 achievement.

Yesterday (9.25.19) Mayor Mike Cunningham spoke at the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce lunch and stated his three-year vision for the City is to have a complete K-12 school system.
