Let the SUMMER begin for 1,643 students in Lakeland schools.
Today (5.24.18) is the last day of school at Lakeland Elementary School (LES) and Lakeland Middle Preparatory School (LMPS).
Students were dismissed mid-day for summer vacation — 11:15 a.m. for LMPS which starts at 8 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. for LES which begins at 9 a.m.
School resumes for both schools Aug. 13.
As the 2017-18 school year ended, there were 930 students at LES in PS-4th grade. The new school in town, LMPS, finished with 713 students in grades 5-8.
LMPS opened to students in August 2017. Lakeland students attend Arlington High School (AHS) through an interlocal agreement until a high school is built.
Matt Adler, principal of LMPS said of the first year, “We can sum up our first year as LMPS Lions as a journey of new beginnings and accomplishments. The development of our academic and extracurricular programs provided students with opportunities in which the students can proudly claim as their own since everything was a first. We are tremendously grateful for the support of our community and look forward to many more successful years ahead.”

AHS also dismissed mid-day and 2018-19 classes resume Aug. 13.
And while students and faculty have time away from the classrooms, two projects will be underway within the Lakeland School System (LSS).
At LMPS athletic fields will be added to the campus. Dr. Ted Horrell, LSS superintendent, said the money to build the fields comes from the $3 million+ in excess funds left from bond proceeds on building the middle school.
Priorities outlined by Dr. Horrell in the first phase:
- Artificial turf football field with lights and adequate seating for middle school events
- Regular turf soccer field with lights and adequate seating for middle school events
- Adequate parking for these events
“Our goal is to have at least the football field ready for use by the school football team in time for their season in August, and the rest is more flexible. Because it is artificial turf, the football field could also be used for soccer and other activities, if desired. We anticipate having the field available for use by the City of Lakeland,” said Dr. Horrell.
LES is adding classrooms and a secure entrance to the school at a cost of about $3 million. The work is expected to be complete by Dec. 31.
