This U.S. federal holiday is observed on the last Monday of May to honor the men and women who died while serving in the military. The purpose of Memorial Day is to memorialize the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Flags are flying at half-staff today. They were lowered Friday through Sunday in memory of Americans lost to COVID-19.
This year, the holiday falls during the unprecedented pandemic of COVID-19 with social distancing and mask-wearing. Locally Memphis and Shelby County are in Phase II of the Back-to-Business Framework.
