Happy faces abundant at Lakeland Fishing Rodeo this morning

It was a gorgeous, sunny, 72° day in Lakeland this morning (5.18.19) for the Annual Children’s Fishing Rodeo at IH Park Lake for children ages 4-12 accompanied by an adult.

The event was hosted by the Lakeland Parks and Recreation Department staff and sponsored by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) and the Lakeland Lions Club.

The free Rodeo included seven, 15- minute sessions. Children were awarded prizes at every session. Trophies also were given for the longest fish, most fish caught – boy, and most fish caught – girl.

Kim Odom, special events coordinator for Lakeland, said more than 100 children registered.

Overall winners

Most fish caught – Girl: Madison Wright, caught 5, age – 9, Shelby Oaks Elementary

Most fish caught – Boy: Alex Lewis, caught 25, age – 5, Lakeland Elementary School (LES)

Longest fish – Connor Clanton 24.5 inches, age – 10, LES

In the first 15-minute session of the morning winners were:

First girl of first session – Avery Simons, seven-years-old, student LES

First boy of the first session was Leo Kimery, a nine-year-old from Millington Elementary School.

Volunteers included Barbara Taylor, Scott Robbins and André Nolan along with eight student volunteers.  A number of City staff members also helped with the event along with Shelby County Sheriff’s Office deputies and volunteer reserve Sheriff’s deputies.
