Girl Scouts help with community service projects at 2 Lakeland parks

Two Girl Scout troops helped beautify the City April 27th by doing community service projects at Zadie E. Kuehl Memorial Park and IH Park.

Kathy Moore said Girl Scout Daisy Troop 10006 cleaned and planted sunflowers, monkey grass and purple creeping phlox to refresh the memorial at the Park.  “The girls spent the winter maintaining compost that they used to help fertilize the new plants. All of this work went towards the requirements for their Garden Journey badge,” said Mrs. Moore.

She said all the girls are first graders, ages 6-7 years old.  Kevin Rooney, director of the Lakeland Parks and Recreation Department, said the same Troop helped to plant the permanent Christmas tree last year at IH Park.

At IH Park, Girl Scout Troop 13771 collected trash to complete service work for the community, according to Rebecca Estridge, co-leader.  “They collected several bags of trash that help prevent all it inevitably ending up in the Lake.”

Mrs. Estridge said, “Yes, we were so excited to be able to do this for our local park. We’ve been discussing recently about how trash, especially plastic, can harm our environment and wildlife, so this was right on time for us.”

She said the Troop is out of Lakeland and meets at St. Paul United Methodist Church every other Monday evening.  There are 17 girls, ages 8-9 years old in the second and third grades, most attending Lakeland Elementary School.
