The City of Lakeland is proud to join communities across North America in celebrating National Public Works Week, taking place this year from May 18–24, 2025. This annual event, sponsored by the American Public Works Association (APWA) since 1960, recognizes the vital contributions of public works professionals who keep our cities running smoothly—often behind the scenes.

This year’s theme, “People, Purpose, Presence,” reflects the dedication and commitment that define public works. The theme highlights the professionals who serve the public each day, the sense of purpose that drives their work, and the ever-present nature of their efforts—even when they go unnoticed.

“This year’s theme perfectly captures what drives our dedicated crews to show up every day,” said Michael Walker, City Manager. “It starts with the people we serve, our residents and businesses in Lakeland. It carries over into our purpose, which is to provide vital public services, and it is shown by our presence in times of need. Whether it’s a routine trash collection, or a blocked street in a storm, I’m proud of our team of professionals who give us their love of people, their sense of purpose, and their committed presence each and every day.”

Public works also takes care of clearing roads around Lakeland during winter weather events.

Throughout the week, the City of Lakeland’s Public Works Department will be celebrating internally with its team, recognizing the hard work and commitment of its staff. However, city officials want to reassure residents that all essential services will continue as scheduled during the celebration week.

“Trash and bulk waste collection will continue as planned and scheduled.” Walker stated, adding, “After all, at City Hall we get things done.”

With more than 32,000 members across the U.S. and Canada, the APWA uses National Public Works Week to educate and engage the public, showcasing the unseen yet indispensable roles public works teams play in enhancing community life. Cities like Lakeland are helping to raise awareness of these efforts, ensuring that the value of public works is recognized and celebrated.

Lakeland residents are encouraged to show their appreciation throughout the week—whether with a wave to a worker on their route, sharing a positive story online or a quick thank-you shared on social media. It’s a small gesture that goes a long way in honoring those who keep Lakeland moving forward.
