Free financial counseling center opens tomorrow to all SC residents

A free one-on-one financial counseling center open to all Shelby County (SC) residents is having a grand opening and ribbon-cutting tomorrow (7.16.19).

Shelby County Trustee Regina Morrison Newman will host the ceremony of the Greater Memphis Financial Empowerment Center (GMFEC) at 10 a.m. Tuesday at The Crane Building, 254 Court Ave. suite 100.

Molly Polatty, program manager for the Center, said the facility will provide all Shelby County residents with free one-on-one financial counseling to help improve their economic stability, mobility and autonomy.

Ms. Polatty said counselors are available to meet with clients from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays as well as 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  ”Sessions are by appointment only at our office in the Crane Building and various co-locations around Shelby County. The phone number to make an appointment is 390-4200.”

Services are free and open to all residents regardless of income, said Ms. Polatty.

The GMFEC is a Shelby County Trustee program in partnership with RISE Foundation, sponsored by the Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis, and made possible with support from the Cities for Financial Empowerment, Shelby County government, Shelby County Assessor’s Office, Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division, United Way of the Mid-South, the Assisi Foundation and Bank On Memphis.

Certified financial counselors are available for personalized guidance and can help with a wide range of personal financial issues like creating a budget or better saving for retirement.
