During an audition Saturday (11.16.19) at Briarcrest Christian School, four LMPS (Lakeland Middle Preparatory School) students were selected for the regional Honors Orchestras in February at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Memphis.
Paula Bert Turner, LMPS Orchestra director, said the students are Sarah Wang, 8th grade, 4th chair violin; Marian Jamora, 8th grade, 2nd chair violin; Grace Choi, 7th grade, 1st chair viola; and Ariela Deleon, 8th grade, 6th chair cello.
Mrs. Turner said thirteen LMPS orchestra students joined hundreds of other musicians from across West Tennessee to audition for a seat in the All-West Tennessee Honors Orchestras, sponsored by WTSBOA (West Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association).
“Based on their age, students auditioned for a middle school string orchestra, a grade 9-10 string orchestra, or a grade 11-12 symphony orchestra. Middle school students prepared two short required excerpts, learned seven two-octave major scales, and were given an example to sight read after only 30 seconds of study.
“LMPS is proud to announce that four students were selected for this prestigious ensemble.”
These students will rehearse for two days and then perform a concert under the baton of noted string orchestra composer and conductor Deborah Baker Feb. 13th and 14th at the Cannon Center. “This is an extra special treat for these young ladies because they were also featured soloists in Ms. Monday’s arrangement of Autumn, performed by the LMPS Orchestra in their fall concert last month.”
The LMPS Orchestra performs locally at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 17th as they present their winter concert in the LMPS gym.
