This fall you should start seeing five four-footed lions in Lakeland, but they will be the fiberglass kind.
Brittney Buchanan, executive director of the Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce, said the Chamber is purchasing the fiberglass lions and should receive them in August. Originally the plan was for art students at LPS (Lakeland Preparatory School) to paint the lions. “The only concern would be the return of students to school,” said Mrs. Buchanan. “I believe the art department was planning on having the students paint them, but with everything going on, we may need to have another option if students do not return as planned (because of the COVID-19 pandemic).”
Once completed, the lions will be clear-coated to prevent fading. One each will be on display at Lakeland Elementary School, LPS and at Lakeland City Hall. The remaining two will be placed at locations in the City. “Of course, we can always order more if the demand is there. We are hoping local businesses will want to sponsor a lion and possibly even have one placed at their location.”
She said the Chamber is funding this initiative but hopes to offset some of the cost with sponsorships.
“We should start seeing the lions around town by fall!” They will be similar to University of Memphis Tigers seen at various locations in Memphis.”
Kevin Bailey, Chamber secretary, said, “Our hope is that the lions will help promote civic pride.”
