A fire this afternoon (1.28.19) at the Somerset at Lakeland Apartments damaged five units but there were no injuries, according to Brent Perkins, public information officer for the Shelby County Fire Department (SCFD).
Dispatchers from the SCFC responded about 12:30 p.m. to the complex at 2918 Champions Drive off U.S. Highway 64 to reports of a residential structure fire.
Mr. Perkins said Engine 65 (in Lakeland) was on scene in seven minutes of dispatch to locate smoke coming from the roof line of the building.
“As other equipment and personnel from Shelby County, Arlington and Memphis Fire Departments continued to arrive, fire was found in an area separating the second and third floors and some walls.
“Fire fighters opened up these areas and knocked down the fire that was trying to grow in size with aggressive hose attacks. In all, almost two dozen fire fighters from five engine companies worked in unison to stop the blaze in under 30 minutes.”
He said five apartments were affected with various amounts of fire, smoke and water. Damage is moderate, the building is repairable and there were no injuries.
Mr. Perkins noted today’s action was an example of a quick call to activate the 911 system.
