COVID-19 – SCHD today (3.17.20)

Coronavirus statistics for today (3.17.20) show fewer under public health monitoring in Shelby County (114 today versus 123 yesterday) and still only two cases in Shelby County, according to Joan Carr, public information officer for the Shelby County Health Department (SCHD).

Totals for the state of Tennessee increased from 39 yesterday to 52, according to information provided.

Statistics released today provide the number of County residents approved for testing by the state lab, SCHD call center statistics and emergency department visits for influenza-like illness for March 14th.

The Health Department is fielding hundreds of calls each day about COVID-19. Below are statistics about calls into the hotline number (833-943-1658) since March 12, 2020, and a daily number of hotline calls fielded yesterday.

Other information to note, we are still in flu season. Below are statistics of emergency room visits for influenza-like illness in Shelby County for March 14, 2020, the most recent statistics available.

Shelby County currently has 2 confirmed COVID-19 cases. The second case is connected to the first. There is no evidence of community transmission of the virus at this time. However, case numbers have increased throughout the state, to 52, increasing our level of concern.

As of today, 36 people in Shelby County have been approved for testing by the Tennessee Department of Health state lab. That number does not include testing by private labs.

Yesterday Tennessee Governor Bill Lee urged every school district in the state of Tennessee to close by March 20, 2020 and remain closed through March 31, 2020.
