COVID-19 impact in Lakeland – Schools, buildings, events

Because of concerns related to the Coronavirus, the Lakeland Senior Center is closed through April 6th.  Previously scheduled programs and events at the IH Clubhouse have also been cancelled.

The Lakeland School System has announced that, following spring break March 16th – 20th, classes will be closed through March 27th.

  

Postponed until a later date is the Lakeland Town Hall Meeting which was planned for March 31st at Lakeland City Hall, according to Shane Horn, Lakeland city manager, who made the announcements today (3.13.20).

The Town Hall was to include Chief Alvin D. Bonner with the Shelby County Fire Department; Sheriff Floyd Bonner Jr. with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office; Mick Wright, Shelby County commissioner; and elected officials from Lakeland.

Mr. Horn said there are no plans to close City Hall now.

Also postponed is the 5K/Fun Run/Arts Festival planned by the Lakeland Education Foundation (LEF) for April 4th at Lakeland Elementary School. Amy Foster, LEF president, said the fundraising event will be rescheduled and announced. Special events at LMPS (Lakeland Middle Preparatory School) cancelled are the PTO Family Trivia Night FUNdraiser March 27th and Cop Stop March 25th.

Dr. Ted Horrell, Lakeland School System (LSS) superintendent, announced today that the six municipal school districts (Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Lakeland and Millington) collectively decided to cancel classes, extracurricular activities and sporting events through the week following spring break.

The information today (3.13.20) from the Shelby County Health Department (SCHD) is two cases of COVID-19 detected in Shelby County, 18 cases in Tennessee and 74 persons under public health monitoring in Shelby County.

Shelby County schools will also be closed the week following spring break, March 23rd – 27th.
