Construction has officially begun on a new restroom facility at the Brody Townsend Athletic Complex, marking another milestone in the ongoing growth and enhancement of one of Lakeland’s premier recreational destinations.
City officials announced that work commenced on June 16 and are asking residents and visitors to exercise caution around designated construction areas while the project is underway. The new facility is expected to improve convenience and accessibility for the thousands of athletes, families and spectators who visit the complex each year.
Located at 9661 Memphis-Arlington Road, the Brody Townsend Athletic Complex opened in May 2022 following nearly two decades of planning and development. The approximately 100-acre site was purchased by the City of Lakeland in 2004, with initial construction supported by a $500,000 state grant awarded in 2018. Since opening, the complex has become a hub for youth football, soccer and baseball programs, as well as adult sports leagues and community events.
In 2024, the facility was renamed in honor of Brody Townsend, a young Lakeland athlete whose determination, character and passion for sports left a lasting impact on the community. The decision to rename the complex received unanimous support from both the Lakeland Board of Commissioners and the Lakeland Parks Board.
The restroom project represents one of the first major improvements to the complex since its opening and is part of a broader long-term vision for the property. City planning documents outline future expansion plans that include additional baseball and softball fields, expanded parking areas and new concession facilities designed to accommodate growing participation and tournament activity.
City leaders view the new restroom facility as an important investment in the park’s infrastructure and overall visitor experience. As construction continues, officials encourage guests to remain alert, follow posted safety signage and avoid restricted work zones.
The project reflects Lakeland’s ongoing commitment to expanding recreational opportunities and enhancing community amenities as the Brody Townsend Athletic Complex continues to evolve under its long-term master plan.
