It’s coming in just 10 days. It is the bi-annual yard/garage sales throughout Lakeland at various addresses, set for Sat. June 13th.
Commissioner Wesley Wright is coordinating the project through the Nextdoor app (nextdoor.com) and utilizing the Lakeland TN Facebook page (not the City of Lakeland Facebook page) to advertise the sales and link to addresses which will participate. He started the project before he was elected to public office in Lakeland in 2017.
From Commissioner Wright: “We have a very short window this time for participants to enter their addresses. Please do so in the comments section. I will make the map for sellers. Cutoff is Tues. June 9th to be on the map.” Link to the FB page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/441116206005745/. Follow the post about the Lakeland Yard Sale. Only addresses within the Lakeland city limits should be listed or email Commissioner Wright at wwright@lakelandtn.org .
The Commissioner urges participants to market and advertise their sales independently although he will advertise the date on social media. He also reminds sellers that any directional signs should be removed immediately after the sale date and residents follow any HOA rules about displaying yard signs. There is no rain date because of the number of families involved.
“I saw the need online for people wanting to sell the same day as others thus increasing the chances for more traffic to buy goods. It seems yards sales are a communal activity, the more the merrier. I saw the success neighboring communities had with synchronized yard sales so I thought let’s give it a try. Starting back in the spring of 2013, and now every early September (for a fall date) and a spring date.”
He provided a survey for residents to select a sale date and June 13th won by two votes.
Commissioner Wright said some sellers choose to start selling on Friday if there’s a threat of rain on Saturday or if they have lots to sell. “It’s always good to get a head start if they have the time. Spring yard sales usually have more participants. Some years we’ve seen upwards to 150 to 200 homes participating. The average participation usually falls between 75 and 100 homes in the final count. It gives people a great opportunity to clear out/organize their homes, give other people an opportunity to save money on furniture and toys and things like kids clothes.”
