Community invited to solemn ceremony retiring U.S. flag at area church

The community is invited to a Flag Retirement Ceremony at 7 p.m. tomorrow (5.26.19) at St. Philip Episcopal Church, 9380 Davies Plantation Rd.

The solemn ceremony is organized by Girl Scout Troops 10339 and 10007, according to Julie Tolbert, troop leader.

“Troops 10339 and 10007 would like to invite our community to join us for a flag retirement ceremony at St. Philip Episcopal Church,” said Mrs. Tolbert.   “We will be outside since fire is involved. Please bring a camp/tailgating chair if you’d like to sit.”

She said the program will include a patriotic song medley, explanation of the flag, its symbolism and finally burning the pieces with audience participation.

The United States Flag Code, Title 4, Section 8k states: “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

Girl Scouts Troop 10339 is a Brownie troop of third graders, with many at Lakeland Elementary School (LES).  Troop 10007 is a Junior Girl Scout Troop with fourth and fifth graders, ten of whom attend LES.

Ms. Tolbert said the troops meet at St. Philip Episcopal Church and they welcome any girls who want to join the groups.
