The second annual LSS (Lakeland School System) International Family Night (IFN) will be Feb. 26 in the LES (Lakeland Elementary School) gym.
The event from 5:30 to 7 p.m. will feature food, culture, music and dance from countries represented by the LSS. The purpose is to unite teachers, parents and students to build Lakeland community.
Those associated with LSS or others in the community are encouraged to host a table representing their native country or a country of choice.
Those interested in sponsoring a table must attend an advance meeting.
- Jan. 8 – 8 a.m. or 4:30 p.m. – room 204 – LES
- Jan. 10 – 7 a.m. or 5 p.m. – LMPS (Lakeland Middle Preparatory School) library.
The first ever and free IFN was Feb. 27, 2018 in the LMPS Cafetorium. A myriad of vibrant costumes, tantalizing food choices and enlightening posters welcomed shoulder-to-shoulder participants.
The smorgasbord of cultural foods and entertainment provided information about countries from all over the globe.
Last year, LMPS Principal Matt Adler said the event was to promote cultural diversity and build acceptance and awareness of different cultures in the Lakeland community. Within the school system last year, there were about 25 languages spoken by families with about the same number of home countries.
Additionally there are a number of students who are part of the English as a Second Language program (ESL) within the LSS. The ESL program works to improve the English language proficiency of students acquiring English in daily instruction, said Mr. Adler.
