The City of Lakeland is urging residents to make their final contributions to the “Lend a Hand, Give a Can” food drive as the community initiative enters its last day on Thursday, Nov. 20. The effort is being led by Baylor Roman—daughter of Mayor Roman—alongside the children of the city’s commissioners, who have united to support local families in need this Thanksgiving.
Non-perishable food items may be dropped off through Thursday at any of the city’s three donation box locations: The Pet Hospitals – Lakeland, Tim Hogan Carpet & Flooring, and Lakeland City Hall. All items collected will be used to assemble Thanksgiving meal boxes and support area food banks.
The project continues later this week with sorting scheduled for Friday, Nov. 21, where students can earn volunteer hours, followed by food distribution on Saturday, Nov. 22, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Remaining donations will be delivered to local food banks on Monday, Nov. 24.
Baylor Roman said she is encouraged by the community’s support so far. “We have one more day to make an impact and every can counts,” she noted.
Interim City Manager Emily Harrell praised the young volunteers for their leadership. “The commissioners’ children are setting a wonderful example of community spirit and service. We encourage every household to participate—every can truly makes a difference,” she said.
Residents can contribute by donating non-perishable items, sharing the city’s promotional materials on social media, or volunteering during the sorting or distribution events.
