“Bookettes” win LES Battle of the Books Competition

Among three teams, the Bookettes won the Battle of the Books (BOTB) competition at LES (Lakeland Elementary School) Thursday (5.2.19), according to Robin Phillips, librarian.

“This year, we had a team of 12, and they were divided into smaller teams of three, said Ms. Phillips.    “They all read the same 22 books, and practiced together all second semester, but competed against each other last week on May 2nd.”

After three rounds, the winner was the team called “The Bookettes” which consisted of Stella Barnett, Elizabeth Foster and Evan Scott.

This is the fifth year for the program at LES for students in third and fourth grades.

At the two-year-old LMPS (Lakeland Middle Preparatory School) the 23-member BOTB team competed in the finals this year at Houston Middle School in Germantown.

The competition at the middle school level is part of the Shelby County Area Wide Middle School Battle of the Books. The LES team does not compete against other schools, said Ms. Phillips.

The County contest encourages independent reading for students in grades 5-8.  Students read 10 pre-selected books and during February and March, demonstrate their knowledge of the books by answering comprehensive content questions during game-show type competition against other participating middle schools.
