Chalk up another fun “first” coming for LMPS students, compliments of the PTO.
A “Back to School Bash” is planned next week at The Grove at Red Oak Lane in Cordova with water activities, games and opportunities for student bonding. The fun-filled day is to kick off the 2018-19 school year.
There are separate field trips per grade, with fifth graders going Aug. 21; seventh graders Aug. 22; sixth graders going Aug. 28; and eighth graders going Aug. 29. The outings will take place during the school day.
Kelley Hale, vice president of programs for the LMPS (Lakeland Middle Preparatory School) PTO, originated the idea for the retreats. “I had the idea that a retreat at the beginning of the year would be a great way for students to get to know each other as well as their teachers, said Mrs. Hale. “The teachers will be the main chaperones and will participate alongside them in all the activities.”
The LMPS PTO has put together class retreats for each grade level beginning Tuesday (8.21.18), said Mrs. Hale. Each grade will attend the Grove at Red Oak Lake, which is a retreat facility in Cordova. It has lots of fun water activities, such as water slides and an Aqua course and other games such as Gaga ball, climbing wall and many others where kids can stay dry if they prefer, she said.
Students are bringing their own lunches and the event is self-funded by fees paid by parents.
LMPS opened to grades 5-8 in August 2017. Students in grades K-4 attend Lakeland Middle School. Through an interlocal agreement, Lakeland high school students attend Arlington High School until a high school is built in Lakeland.
