With temps in the mid-70s and sunny skies, it took only minutes for a boy and girl to catch the first fish at the annual Lakeland Children’s Fishing Rodeo yesterday (5.19.18) at the IH Park Lake.
Ella Burnett, seven-years-old, of Lakeland, won several categories during the morning: “First Fish Caught by a Girl” category; “Longest Fish” at 20.5 inches; and “Most Fish Caught by a Girl” category with seven fish. She is a second grader at Lakeland Elementary School.
Leo Kimery, an eight-year-old first grader from Mason, TN was the first boy to catch a fish and received a prize.
Six-year-old Hudson Tapp took home the trophy for the “Most Fish Caught for a Boy” category. He reeled in 20 catfish for the day. The LES kindergartner caught the most fish of anyone at the rodeo.
The event was hosted by the Lakeland Parks and Recreation Department staff and sponsored by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) and the Lakeland Lions Club.
Approximately 800 pounds of catfish were stocked in the lake earlier this week by the TWRA, according to Kim Odom, special events coordinator for the City.
Volunteers who helped with the event for ages 4-12 included Barbara Taylor, Bobbi Cornett, André Nolan, Carl Odom, Alyssa Stephens, Townsend Blackwell, Trace Blackwell, Ayden Rock, Libby Baird, Daniel Chu, Lashundrea Partee and Julia Wilhite.
