Mr. Einstein was on campus with Elvis, BB King, Amelia Earhart, Florence Nightingale and a host of other historical figures who came to life at the first ever Living Wax Museum in the Lakeland Middle Preparatory School (LMPS) library.
Audrey Engstrand, fifth grade social studies and integrated language arts teacher, organized the project for all LMPS fifth graders because as a fifth grader herself, she completed the very same project.
“I participated in a living wax museum when I was in 5th grade, and it was a very engaging and educational experience because I got to learn about the figure I chose as well as figures chosen by other students,” said Ms. Engstrand.
The four-day Museum started yesterday (5.14.19), said Ms. Engstrand, and continues today, tomorrow and Monday. Two classes of about 45-50 students present each day with other fifth grade classes visiting the Museum.
Ms. Engstrand explained the process.
“Each student chooses a significant historical figure that they would like to represent. They research information about the person and create a poster board that will displayed at their ‘station’ during the museum.
“They will also conduct a 20-30 second speech about their figure and as other 5th grade students tour the Museum, the figures will ‘come to life’ and present from a first person perspective as their historical figure when activated by a ‘button’ that they will create for their station.”
Figures were chosen from lessons on Tennessee history as well as World Wars I and II, the Civil War, the Industrial Revolution and the 1920s and 1950s, said Ms. Engstrand.

The students utilized poster board, materials to decorate the poster board (printed materials, markers, crayons, etc.), Chromebook and library books for research, with students working on their costume at home, said Ms. Engstrand.
Of the project, Ms. Engstrand said the students had a lot of fun with their assignment.
