The Lakeland Preparatory School girls tennis team has made program history, securing its first-ever appearance in the state championship following an impressive postseason run fueled by determination, resilience, and composure under pressure.
Head Coach Melanie Fleming praised the team’s effort and mindset throughout the season, highlighting the players’ ability to rise to every challenge while competing with confidence and intensity. Fleming also recognized assistant coach Ben Rollins for his dedication and support throughout the year.
“The Lakeland Preparatory girls tennis team is headed to the state championship for the first time in school history,” Fleming said. “They earned every point with grit, composure, and relentless determination. In the biggest moments, they stay focused, confident, and fearless. They push themselves and each other to be better every single day.”
The Lions have consistently demonstrated poise in high-pressure situations throughout the season, developing a reputation for toughness and teamwork. Fleming said the close bond shared among the players has become one of the defining strengths of the program.
“This team plays with heart,” Fleming said. “They fight for every rally, every set, and every teammate on the court next to them. Their commitment is undeniable and does not go unnoticed. This team never cracks under pressure. They rise to every challenge with grace and determination.”
Individual results from the state-clinching match included:
- Jenna Cowell — 6-1, 6-3
- Kate Sheridan — 2-6, 6-1, tiebreaker 10-6
- Naomi Brown — 6-3, 6-0
- Bethany Brown — 6-4, 3-6, tiebreaker 10-7
- Madison Fleming — 0-6, 4-6
Fleming said the team’s motto, “No Let Up. No Give Up.”, reflects the identity and mindset the players have embraced both on and off the court.
With the state championship now ahead, the Lakeland Prep girls tennis team continues to build on a historic season while inspiring pride throughout the school and community.
